NextGen Initiatives

The NextGen Energy Council is active across a wide range of initiatives.  Below are some of our most important current and planned activities.

NextGen Briefs State Legislators On Advanced Coal Technologies

NextGen briefed more than 125 State legislative leaders from coast-to-coast recently in Washington, D.C., at a standing-room-only workshop on the status of clean-coal technologies.

The briefing occurred during the winter meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council.

Among the speakers were these industry experts:

  • Mac McLennan - Tri State Generation
  • John Weisgall - MidAmerican Energy
  • Carrie Atiyeh - Evergreen Energy
  • Jim Sears - A2BE Carbon Capture

More NextGen projects

  1. Analysis:  “The Near-Zero-Emission Coal Technology Roadmap For The West”
This analysis provides a comprehensive roadmap describing how advanced coal technologies can be developed and deployed in the Western U.S. in a manner that accelerates the eventual development and deployment of “near-zero-emission” coal power facilities. Read more here.
  2. Analysis:  “Strategies For Managing The Costs And Risks Associated With Development and Deployment of Advanced Coal Power Plants With CO2 Capture & Sequestration”
This analysis examines various strategies for how States, regulatory bodies and private-sector companies can manage the costs and risks that are associated with the development and deployment of advanced coal power plants with CO2 capture & sequestration.
  3. Analysis:  “Options For Limiting Legal Liability Associated With CO2 Sequestration”
NextGen has worked on studies that examine the current legal environment regarding liability issues related to sequestration of CO2 in underground storage areas.  These studies explore policy avenues for limiting liability so as to limit the risk to sequestration project supporters and other parties associated with these projects.
  4. Analysis:  “Clean Energy Technologies:  Quantifying The True Costs To Consumers And How To Minimize Them”
This analysis will provide public policy makers at the state and federal levels with an unbiased cost-benefit analysis – with an emphasis on consumer impacts – of a variety of “clean energy” policy options now being discussed by policy makers and proposed strategies for minimizing those costs.
  5. Western-Southern-Great Plains Gubernatorial Coalition To Promote Advanced Fossil Technologies
NextGen is building a working partnership with a number of Southern, Western and Great Plains Governors on an “American Energy Security Alliance” that will support the rapid deployment of coal-to-liquids facilities.
  6. Coal-To-Liquids Fact-Finding Tours For Elected Officials
NextGen organizes and manages field trips and fact-finding missions for federal and state elected officials to various coal-to-liquids and related facilities in the West and South.
  7. Coal-To-Liquids Technology Field Workshops
In conjunction with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Energy and individual Governors’ offices, NextGen organizes and manages several field workshops on coal-to-liquids technologies.  These workshops are designed to put government officials together with technology companies to discuss possible projects in a particular state.
  8. CO2 Pipeline Infrastructure Initiative
NextGen works with key federal officials to develop economic and regulatory incentives at the federal level that encourage investment in carbon dioxide (CO2) pipeline infrastructure systems across the West.
  9. Initiative:  Coal Refining And Biomass Blending As A CO2 Reduction Strategy
NextGen's education initiatives investigate and support  the potential for coal refining and biomass blending technologies to sharply reduce emissions, including CO2, on a system-wide basis.
  10. Technology Experts Team
NextGen relies on a team of experts in technology development, finance, regulatory processes and other areas in order to educate elected officials and others involved in the public policy development process.
  11. Develop and Promote Incentives For Enhanced CO2 Utilization
NextGen partners with federal agencies to conduct a study which will identify incentives that can encourage increased utilization of CO2 produced by energy development and generation in the West.
  12. Clean Energy Partnerships:  Fossil-Renewable Hybrid Systems
NextGen works with federal agency officials to develop economic and regulatory incentives that will encourage private-sector investment in fossil-renewable hybrid facilities.
  13. News Media Education Campaign
NextGen hosts briefings for news media representatives and editorial boards to help media professionals better understand the science and technological details behind advanced energy development and encourage more informed coverage of these issues.
  14. Public Education Campaign
NextGen works with a variety of organizations – such as the Americans For American Energy grassroots coalition – to promote greater education of the general public on the promise, realities and costs of advanced energy development.
